I’m 29 years old and was born and raised in Fort St. John. I’ve been training since 2018 and started coaching no-gi jiu-jitsu in June 2021. I love meeting new people through the gym—people I might never have met otherwise—and watching them gain confidence and fall in love with the sport just like I did. The support for martial arts in our community is amazing, and being part of its growth over the past seven years has been incredible.
My name is Landon Grimm, and I’m the wrestling coach here. I love the FSJ area—the people are absolutely wonderful, and the community truly does amazing things for this town. Coaching is my passion because it lets me share my knowledge and help others grow. My own journey started when I assisted my wrestling coach with athletes, and now here I am as a coach myself!
My name is Devan Murray, and I have been doing jiu-jitsu since 2020. I started jiu-jitsu as a means to get into better shape, and before long, I was hooked. It was the perfect combination of challenge, good people, great atmosphere, and physical exercise.
I started competing in tournaments at white belt and have competed alongside my three kids and wife all the way up to purple belt. I am in far better shape going into my 40s than I was going into my 30s, and I owe that in large part to jiu-jitsu, Iron Forge and all of its members, and my good friend and coach Dylan Lielke.
I have been coaching the kids’ classes at Iron Forge along with my wife Cassie for three years and have thoroughly enjoyed watching the kids develop skills and confidence on and off the mats!
Hi, my name's Brandon, I'm 37 years old and I'm the boxing coach at Iron Forge.
I've been training in boxing since I was a kid. My dad was a pro fighter, my brother was an amateur, my grandfather fought in the army, and my uncle's been coaching in BC for the past 40 years. I basically grew up in the gym, learning the ropes early and continuing to train and fight at gyms all across northern BC through my teens and into adulthood.
I started coaching at Iron Forge four years ago because I wanted to pass my knowledge on to the next generation. What I love most is seeing the commitment from my fighters and everyone who comes to my classes day to day. Watching them build their skills and confidence - both in and out of the gym - that's what makes coaching so rewarding.
I've called Fort St. John home for the last 15 years, and coaching has been an awesome way to meet people and give back to this great community.
Hi, I'm Sabine Richter! I'm originally from Germany but moved to Canada a few years ago - and like so many others, I never left Fort St. John after that.
Staying active has always been important to me. I first got hooked on cardio kickboxing, then fell in love with the more technical boxing and kickboxing classes. When the opportunity came to coach kids' kickboxing here at Iron Forge, I jumped at it!
Being a mom of three with a background in Early Childhood Education definitely helps when working with the little ones. Nothing makes my day more than seeing the kids succeed at something they've worked so hard for - their smiles say it all!
My name is Cassie Murray, I just turned 40, I'm a homeschooling mom of 3! I've lived in Fort St. John most of my life and love the community here.
I was in a car accident when I was 18 and told by many specialists from all over I couldn't work again or do much more than light yoga and walking after all my injuries. But I was always quite active so I hated being told that and was always looking for something more stimulating and challenging. I did weights and cardio at the gym for years on and off, tried a few different sports teams but nothing was holding my attention, and I really wasn't finding much overall improvement either. My children and husband all did jiu jitsu here at Iron Forge, so with some encouragement from them I started with the kickboxing program and loved it! I moved my way into some no gi classes and eventually tried the gi classes! I absolutely fell in love with jiu jitsu! It engages my mind, and I feel stronger, and my mobility and chronic pain has improved so much!
I started coaching the kids classes with my husband a while back now. I love watching the children grasp the technique and go for it! They help each other learn and grow. And you can watch their confidence build in and out of the gym.
I've recently entered a few competitions and got to bring home some golds!
I wanted to be able to relate to the children who compete in our classes and understand what they are going through. It's scary and hard, and I have respect for the kids who get up and go for it! It takes courage and grit to get up there and compete!
Our whole family is in the gym regularly, it's a great environment, it's a healthy lifestyle, and you walk out a little stronger every day!
I grew up just outside of Fort St. John on my grandparents' farm. In 2009, I moved to the Lower Mainland and began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing. By 2011, I was coaching regularly, and after a decade of training and teaching in Fort St. John, I opened Iron Forge Fight and Fitness in April 2022. I originally got into martial arts to build self-confidence and self-esteem. Over time, it became a lifelong pursuit—both as a competitor and a coach.
